In the fifth inning against the Braves, a hard liner hit up the middle by Cardinal Woody Williams is snagged by a leaping Rafael Furcal, who then steps on second to double up Mike Matheny before tagging Orlando Palmeiro, who was on his way back to first. The Braves’ shortstop becomes just the 12th player in history to record an unassisted triple play.
NOTE: As many of you have already pointed out, this obviously did NOT happen in 1974. Allow me to explain: I had a totally different post queued up for a few days, but I wasn’t at all happy with it. It lacked something that I still can’t quite put my finger on. This prompted a last minute change of posts. Unfortunately, I overlooked one very important detail. I sincerely apologize for the error, and I promise to do a better job going forward. Thanks so much for your patience.
